Getting it done versus it must be perfect

Getting it done

What is your view on this?

Are you the type of person who needs to get something done no matter what? Or are you a perfectionist insisting on everything being just right before it sees the light of day?

The trouble with being a perfectionist is you can often feel agitated when you don’t know every intricacy. A lot of perfectionists find themselves running around in circles or perhaps even delaying the task at hand. But sadly delaying something can often lead to it feeling more complicated, more daunting and in some cases leaving you forgetting your initial thoughts.

We are all different

People are wired differently. We have different views, patterns and attitudes. So where do you start?

I say a good start is to understand yourself, to understand your modus operandi first, and save your frustrations or nerves.

Whilst some people thrive when they leave everything until the last minute. Others enjoy the research phase and perhaps spend too much time on it. So much so that they end up struggling with analysis-paralysis syndrome.

But can you do something about and where do you start?

I’m assuming that since you have read this far it is something you are curious about. Something that you yourself struggle with or perhaps it’s a friend or colleague encounters this problem. But is there a solution?

Having unfinished tasks, or perhaps unstarted tasks, hanging over us can be very draining. It can lead to moodiness, someone who isn’t dependable and even unhappiness.

Plan of Action

I’ve put together a plan to help with getting it done:

One

First, ask yourself if it is really a task you want or need in your life. If not getting it done will prove hard and unnecessary. So don’t be afraid to acknowledge it isn’t needed and move on. When it comes to yourself there is no point in false promises. The main person you are disappointing is yourself. Do you really need to make yourself promises to wake up at 5am every morning? Perhaps it that you will run more, lose weight or even learn a new language. If the reality is you haven’t done it, and it isn’t necessary, then free yourself. Make the decision once and for all to either stick with it or let it go.

Two

You will then be left with the tasks that you definitely need in your life. Even getting to this step can already feel great, weight or your mind. Don’t you think? Now its time to formulate a plan of action. Small steps can actually get you quite far. Breaking down the tasks into smaller steps can really help with getting it done. Perhaps the task at hand is to finally deal with that ever-increasing email inbox. Set yourself a plan of action. Perhaps commit to dealing with 3 old emails each day, plus the new ones of course. If you stick to this daily the task will become less daunting and you will achieve the desired result.

Three

Dedicate time to getting it done. It is proven that doing the same thing, at the same time and maintaining a routine will shorten the time span moving forward and become a new habit. One that becomes faster each time you do it until the time spent on it is more reasonable. You can still be flexible when getting it done. You can adapt the task at hand and create your own style. If the initial idea was to run every day after work and it doesn’t suit you then adapt. Perhaps its because you don’t like running in rush hour. It could be that running in the morning with fewer people around is more suitable for your needs. So adapt but don’t give up.

Four

Creating a routine and helping your body is one of my favourite parts. You can help your body and brain thrive. Your body will strive to do the new version of your task.

One of my top tips is to introduce essential oils into your routine. Why not try breathing essential oil via dry inhalation or diffusor could work magic for you. With the right oil it can help with concentration, aid happiness, boost your mood and help you achieve your goal.

Essential oils are unique, individualist and can be very exciting. There are multiple oils to suit your needs. Whether its Lemongrass, Bergamot, Orange, Spearmint, Lavender or Basil essential oil they will create the mood, add relaxation and help your brain to sustain the success.

If you are already using essential oils what is your favourite?
